TURNITIN

Turnitin is a website developed and maintained by a group of professionals, including teachers, scientists, mathematicians and others. The focus of the website and the organization behind it, iParadigms, is to foil attempts at plagiarism, primarily from the internet. The product they have developed to achieve this is called WriteCycle.

The WriteCycle Suite incorporates three tools to assist educators with ensuring the veracity of their students work and to help those students to improve on their skills for the future.

The first tool is Originality Checking. This tool enables educators to validate or refute the integrity of the students work. It can do this by comparing the students compositions against an archive of billions of web pages, periodicals, students papers, and other literature. It also is used to teach students how to use citation properly in their work.

The second tool in the suite is GradeMark. GradeMark is an efficient tool for educator and learner alike by allowing teachers to comment on, evaluate, and then post the grades for assignments online for immediate review. It also provides the necessary information an educator needs to focus on a students deficiencies, helping that student to achieve his utmost potential.

The third tool is Peer Review. Peer Review enables classmates to read and critique the work of their classmates, providing viewpoints from people other than the instructor. This provides for the writer multiple sources of input regarding the work presented, besides just that of the teacher. This also provides the students doing the analysis the opportunity to expand on their own editing skills as well.
